Woodlin School District R-104 is a single-campus district, housing grades Pre-K to 12, located on the Eastern Plains of Colorado in western Washington County. The total enrollment in 2009-2010 is 105. Three small communities surround Woodlin: Lindon, Woodrow, and Last Chance. All of these communities combined have a population of less than 250. The people of the Woodlin area shop in the larger towns about forty miles away.
Nearly all of the students attending Woodlin live in a rural setting. Most of the parents farm or ranch for a living, and the main resource is agriculture. All of the students are bused to school except for the teachers’ children who live on campus housing, and some High School students who drive themselves.
The Woodlin school system has a total teaching staff of thirteen along with three paraprofessionals, and the administration is made up of one principal/superintendent. Eight teachers have their masters degree, while five teachers have their bachelors degrees. Eight teachers have less than ten years of experience, and five teachers have more than ten years of experience. The student teacher ratio is approximately eight to one. School is in session Tuesday through Friday on extended school hours, 8:00am-4:00pm. Several teachers live on campus in apartments provided by the district.
The school facility consists of two buildings. The elementary is in one wing, and the middle/high school is in the other wing of the main building. In the elementary, each classroom is self-contained. The secondary math classroom, fine arts department and an excellent auditorium are located in an adjacent building.
The school is the center of all activities for our area. We provide evening classes, intramural sports, and college courses along with our outstanding elementary and secondary programs. The local Lions Club meets at the school in the evenings. The Lions Club supports the school by providing scholarships and other helpful work around the school. The school is used for a variety of community events.
The school district has implemented a distance learning program through a microwave tower in cooperation with other school districts throughout the East Central Board of Cooperative Services. This system allows the district to expand course offerings and programs for our elementary and secondary students and adults within the community. A feature of our program made possible by this system is the “Sophomore Scholars” program, in which students can earn an Associate’s Degree from Morgan Community College by taking courses for dual high school /college credit in their junior and senior years. After graduation, the student can then attend any Morgan Community College campus to complete their associate degree.
