Fighting Hunger

Woodlin FBLA members have decided to fight hunger this school year by reaching out on three different levels. The first level will benefit our local needs, Caring Ministries in Fort Morgan. We held a competition between classes from mid-November thru mid-December. The class finishing in first place was Mrs. Brown’s 3rd and 4th graders with 195 pounds of food; in second place were Mrs. McCracken’s 5th and 6th graders with 175 pounds and in third was Mrs. Schoonveld’s 1st and second graders with 150 pounds. At the secondary level the Junior High students collected 115 pounds of food; all total we delivered approximately 960 pounds of non-perishable food items to Caring Ministries. The second level in our fight against hunger is volunteering at a soup kitchen in downtown Denver, Grant Avenue Street Reach, once per quarter. Student comments on their soup kitchen experience, nice, cool, humbling, interesting, and fun but sad, and it feels good to help. Regular volunteers at the soup kitchen commented that we always bring in such nice kids. Then our third level of hunger outreach is more global, we purchased a Garden Basket from Heifer International. They will deliver the basket to a needy family and teach them how to raise their own food. The basket includes, fruit trees, seeds, rabbits, chickens and honey bees for pollination. At this time we have an attitude of gratitude to everyone who brought non-perishables to school for our drive. Thank You!!!

In the words of Anne Frank, “No one has ever become poor by giving.”
